Sobriety Timeline: What to Expect When You Stay Sober

If you’re reading this, you’ve found the National Center for Alcohol Statistics. Welcome!

Our goal with this site is to share the benefits of dropping your moderate drinking habit. While it receives less attention than true alcoholic behavior, the life-long effects of drinking 2–3 alcoholic beverages per day are shown to be negative.

While it’s popular for people (and even reputable health organizations!) to say that drinking here and there can be good for you, the truth is that the studies used to support this claim have been shown to be highly flawed by independent review and authoritative studies from the likes of Harvard.

If you’re just getting started, read about what to expect on day one of sobriety. And if you need a reminder of why quitting is worth it, our alcohol fact sheet puts the costs and consequences into hard numbers.
